Todd Talk: Fiscal Responsibility (RTD - Regional Transportation District)

Is it time to get out of the RTD District? They are have been collecting $10-$15 million annually for a fraction of the service, or none at all now. The answer is....it depends, but ultimately I think YES!

Some candidates running for elected office are proposing getting out of the RTD District. I happen to agree with them, though would like to see if something can be salvaged first.

I brought up RTD in my last campaign back in 2018, that the level of service and tax collected is way off and not fair. Removing ourselves from RTD is very tough. I have attended local meetings with RTD to hear what they have to say on the subject. In comments is an article about this.

Some bullet points:

* Parker RTD taxing district contribute about $11+ million per year to the district.

* We get a fraction in pre COVID days, and none now.

* Castle Rock voted to be removed from the RTD taxing district in 2005.

* The effort would require a state legislator to sponsor a bill to ultimately put the question up to town voters.

From article link below:

“We don't get anywhere near that level of service in return,” Fussa said. “The mayor and council understand it's a regional district, so the money they put in the pot is used for transportation service throughout the district… but our residents and businesses send a substantial amount of money to RTD and we get very little return of service in terms of transit service."

Thoughts on removing ourselves from the RTD District and being fiscally responsible? Please discuss.

Summary:

Personally, I feel having public transportation options is important. For small buinesses for workers if needed, for senior citizens and youth alike who otherwise would not be mobile. Having said that, the $11+ million we send to RTD and level of service is out of whack so it is not being fiscally responsible to keep this in Parker.
